Hoval is one of the world's leading providers of heating and indoor climate solutions. In order to meet the sharp rise in demand for heat pumps, the company has expanded its site in Istebné, Slovakia - with a state-of-the-art, fully automated warehouse system that was planned and implemented by HÖRMANN Intralogistics as general contractor.

The project marks an important step in Hoval's strategic development. The plant was successfully accepted and handed over in August 2025. Hoval is thus creating the basis for optimizing production and logistics processes in the long term and further expanding global sales of its heat pumps.

The completed large and small parts warehouse for heat pumps in Istebné, Slovakia

The concept

Automated multi-solution storage system with pallet high-bay warehouse, AutoStore® and HiLIS WMS

The facility combines two systems for large and small parts logistics. At its heart is a three-aisle pallet high-bay warehouse with a length of 115 meters, a width of 22 meters and a height of 40 meters. Three storage and retrieval machines with double-deep telescopic forks move the pallets fully automatically.
An AutoStore® system, which was specially designed for small parts logistics, operates in parallel. The two systems are connected via a high-performance pallet conveyor system that links incoming goods, production, order picking, finished goods storage and dispatch.

The HiLIS warehouse management system from HÖRMANN synchronizes all components and ensures seamless material flows between AutoStore®, high-bay warehouse and connected processes.

Objectives and challenges of the project:

The aim was to automate and standardize all storage and picking processes to enable Hoval to achieve greater efficiency and flexibility in heat pump production.
One challenge lay in the tight schedules and changing framework conditions, which required a high degree of precision and coordination between the trades. The interaction of the systems - AutoStore®, HRL, conveyor technology and software - also had to be perfectly coordinated to ensure smooth commissioning.
