HÖRMANN Intralogistics implements AutoStore® system for MULTIVAC Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co.KG

[Munich, January 2023] - HÖRMANN Intralogistics is pleased to have received an order from MULTIVAC Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co.KG. In a planned new building in the industrial park Wolfertschwenden in Unterallgäu, a fully automated AutoStore® system on 1,500 m² with a total of 54,000 containers will in the future take over the small parts handling within the spare parts logistics of the packaging machine specialist. The background to the Greenfield expansion was the growth targets, integration of further companies and separation of central logistics into production and spare parts areas. In addition to the new logistics center, a manufacturing plant will also be built at the site.

MULTIVAC Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co.KG has been in existence since 1961 and sells integrated processing and packaging solutions for food, medical and pharmaceutical products as well as industrial goods. The MULTIVAC portfolio includes various packaging technologies as well as automation solutions, labeling and quality control systems. The range is rounded off by solutions upstream of the packaging process in the areas of portioning and slicing as well as bakery technology. The company is now an international player with customers in over 165 countries, more than 80 subsidiaries, 13 production sites and 6,900 employees.

The proven AutoStore® system is used, an innovative solution for the automatic storage and picking of small parts in plastic containers, which are stacked vertically directly on the hall floor under a track system and stored and retrieved by robots. The compact design dispenses with aisles and racks and thus optimizes volume utilization, dynamics, energy efficiency, expandability, material use and connection to picking stations.

For the multinational company, HÖRMANN Intralogistics solved a complex task for the required flow of goods. In twelve hours of daily operating time, an average of 1,350 storage and retrieval operations per hour are managed. The AutoStore® grid, which covers an area of 1,500 m², has a total capacity for 54,000 containers, each 330 mm high, in which spare parts from all product-leading companies are stored. These are dispensed tirelessly and fully automatically by 45 robots to 43 ports or returned to the system for storage of items.

"After intensive planning with our logistics consultant IWL, various simulation runs by HÖRMANN Intralogistics as part of the tender preparation and the final order negotiations, we are now excited about the realization of this major project." Florian Birkle, project manager for the spare parts logistics center at MULTIVAC, is pleased. "The highly professional cooperation with the HÖRMANN intralogistics experts has convinced us every day anew that we are going the right way with the smart AutoStore® system. The gain in capacity and the potential savings will be worthwhile for us and our customers."

HÖRMANN Intralogistics is acting as general contractor for the implementation of the AutoStore® system, which will accelerate, expand and optimize MULTIVAC's small parts logistics. The new system is scheduled to go into operation by mid-2025.

"MULTIVAC's requirements in the business field of machine development, manufacturing and export presented us with exciting challenges in terms of material flow and building planning. Through close coordination and team spirit between MULTIVAC, IWL and our AutoStore® team, we found a technically sophisticated and modular automation solution. With over 50,000 bins and 45 robots, thousands of picking processes are completed in record time." sums up Robert Heinz, Head of AutoStore® at HÖRMANN Intralogistics.

As an official AutoStore® distributor, HÖRMANN Intralogistics has already realized almost 50 installations at home and abroad. This development demonstrates the future viability and versatility of the cube storage solution and is considered trend-setting for the automation trend for small parts in intralogistics.
